Lupita walks away with the Award for the Best Supporting Actress at the 2014 Academy Award. In her acceptance speech, a particular quote stuck on the mind : ”As I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”- Lupita Nyong’o
We are loving how Lupita is continuing to empower women of colour through the beauty of her skin, changing the perception of black beauty, breaking barriers in a foreign land and creating a conversation within our own communities about what is beautiful. You’ve taken being happy in your own skin into another level!
She’s also a fashion inspiration. She has appeared on the covers of numerous magazines, including New York’s Spring 2014 fashion issue, W magazine, UK magazine Dazed & Confused. She has also been a regular on Harper’s Bazaar’s Derek Blasberg’s Best Dressed List since Autumn 2013, she sure deserved that because everything she wears is a HIT!
Lupita has spoken about what changed her outlook on beauty and this was after her finding of a role model in a popular culture who looked similar to her, this was none other than supermodel Alek Wek. ‘When I saw Alek, I inadvertently saw a reflection of myself that I could not deny,’ she said. Miss Nyong’o added, ‘She was dark as night, she was on all of the runways and in every magazine and everyone was talking about how beautiful she was.”
Sounds like she’s following the foot steps of this supermodel! In 2014, Lupita was chosen as one of the faces for Miu Miu’s Spring 2014 campaign.
“Beauty is compassion for yourself, and those around you. You can’t just consume it, it’s something you have to be.” - Lupita Nyong’o
Don’t let your complexion be an obstacle to overcome anything!
